These are made in less than 60 minutes and you need very basic ingredients for this recipe. Recipe includes instructions for making smashed potatoes in oven and stove top. Enjoy!

Smashed potatoes are our go to fun snack or side dish when I get good baby potatoes. This is a wonderful dish with super crispy on the outside and melt in mouth tender and fluffy on the inside with perfect seasonings.

Potatoes are a staple at home. We enjoy it regularly in paratha, aloo gobi, sandwich regularly. On days when we want something special, potatoes take the form of oven fries, wedges, kulcha or these smashed potatoes.

These smashed potatoes are such fun to make especially kids will love the smashing part. Season them as you wish, pop in the oven and there you have, a winner of snack. Perfect with many a meals or as snack. It is vegan and gluten free if you care πŸ™‚

About This Recipe

Smashed potatoes are an easy, tasty and addictive potato recipe for snack made with small potatoes. You basically boil the potatoes until they are just tender, smash them, add the seasoning to the potatoes smashed and bake till crispy. Sounds delicious right, it is also super easy to make, most of the work is done by the oven.

You can serve this smashed potato as side dish with any salad, bread or pasta. These crispy potatoes are also a wonderful snack with dips such as sour cream, tzatziki, muhammara, schezwan sauce, mustard dip etc.

This recipe I am sharing here uses Basic Indian seasonings. I have just used a pinch of red chili powder, turmeric powder mixed in some olive oil.

Once baked, you can brush the crispy potatoes with melted butter and sprinkle some chopped herbs before serving. I have used vegan butter here. You can also brush with garlic butter.

What Is Smashed Potato Made Of?

Potatoes– baby potatoes are tiny potatoes are best suited for this recipe. You can use red potatoes or yellow potatoes. Even yukon gold potatoes can be used here.

Red Chili powder– use as much as you like. I have made them moderately spicy by using 1 teaspoon chili powder for around 16oz or 500 grams tiny potatoes (around 15 potatoes)

Salt– add to taste. You can use pink salt, kosher salt, or even sea salt flakes or black salt.

Olive oil– For this recipe, I have used around 3 tablespoons olive oil to mix the seasonings with. You can easily use avocado oil or any other cooking oil as you like.

Melted butter– Once you smash the potatoes and bake them, brush with melted butter immediately for wonder flavor. Here I have used vegan butter.

Chopped herbs– Do not forget to garnish the potatoes with some finely chopped herbs before serving. It could be anything like chopped cilantro leaves, parsley depending on the seasoning you have used.

How To Make Best Smashed Potatoes

Pick and rinse 16oz or 500 grams of tiny potatoes well. Using a vegetable scrubber or brush clean any mid or dirt by scrubbing them thoroughly.

Place potatoes in a deep pot and add water to it. Add a big pinch of salt and bring the water to a boil over high heat. Cook the potatoes until they are just fork tender for about 10-12 minutes.

Once done, drain excess water in a large colander and spread the par boiled potatoes on a clean towel to remove some more moisture. Also let them cool for 5 minutes. In the meanwhile preheat the oven at 425 F. Also brush a large rimmed baking sheet olive oil generously. You may need around 3-4 teaspoons. In a small bowl combine olive oil, red chili powder and salt well to make the seasoning mixture.

Now let’s get smashing the potatoes. Smash the potatoes well using a potato masher or a fork or the heel of your palm. We are looking to smash them while keeping the base intact, do not make them pieces. Next dip each smashed potato into the prepared seasoning well so that seasoning enters crooks of the vegetable nicely. This step will make the potatoes way more flavorful that tossing them in seasoning or just spreading the season over the lined potatoes.

Once seasoned place the potatoes on the prepared baking sheet. Do not line the tray with parchment paper. Now pop the tray into oven and bake the potatoes until are crispy at the edges and color turns to golden brown. It will take around 25-35 minutes.

Once done, remove from oven and brush melted butter on crispy smashed potatoes immediately. You can also sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper all over. Sprinkle chopped herbs and serve immediately with dips like mayonnaise or sour cream or as side dish with any meal.

Smashed Potatoes On Stove Top.

If you prefer to make this recipe on stove top, here are the instructions.

Prepare the potatoes, smash and season as mentioned in the recipe.

Heat a large a cast iron skillet and spread 2 tablespoons well. Place potatoes on the hot skillet and cook in medium heat until crispy. Cook for 12-15 minutes first and them flip them. Cook for another 15 minutes until crispy. Place potatoes as single layer only.

Recipe Variations

Continental flavors– Instead of the basic flavors mentioned here you can make smashed potatoes with continental flavors.

For that prepare the potatoes as mentioned in the recipe. For seasoning combine 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, salt to taste and mix well. Use this seasoning for baking the potatoes. Once done, brush with butter and sprinkle chopped parsley. Serve.

Instead of garlic powder you can also use 3 cloves garlic minced.

Asian Style Smashed Potatoes- Prepare the potatoes as mentioned in the recipe. In a small bowl combine 2 tablespoons sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon vinegar and few cloves garlic minced, 1/2 inch ginger minced. Add salt and pepper to taste. Use this as seasoning and bake the potatoes.

Smashed Potatoes With Garlic Butter Parmesan cheese– Prepare the potatoes with continental flavors as mentioned above. Bake them for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle grated parmesan cheese all over and bake again until the cheese melts. Once done brush garlic butter all over the crispy smashed potatoes.

Expert Tips & Recipe Notes

Choose the right potatoes– it is extremely important to choose the right potatoes for this recipe. Baby or tiny potatoes are preferred here as they are easy for smashing. Next select potatoes of uniform size for even baking.

Smash them right– While smashing the potatoes make them as flat as possible but do not make them into pieces. Use a potato masher or fork if you are not comfortable using the heel of your palm.

Grease the baking sheet generously– Use a large sturdy rimmed baking sheet and grease it liberally. Do not use parchment. You can also use cooking spray instead of oil.

How To Serve Smashed Potatoes

As side dish– these can be served as side dish in any continental meal with bread, salad like chickpea salad, cucumber tomato salad, apple walnut salad or even this pasta salad.

As snack– these potatoes are also an excellent snack or appetizer. Almost any creamy dip or sauce goes well with these. You can serve these with sour cream dip, tahini sauce, basil pesto, cilantro pesto, mango chili sauce etc.

Storing Leftover Smashed Potatoes

On a very highly unlikely situation of having leftover smashed potatoes, you can store them refrigerated for 2-3 days.

Reheat in preheated oven until warm at 425 F when required.

Be gentle while smashing the potatoes. You have to flatten them yet retain them full. Do not break into pieces.
