How to Make Sweet Potato Casserole in a Slow Cooker
Aunt Lou here.
THIS recipe is the one that started it all for me…in the oven. THISis the recipe I have been making for a decade. It is tried and true folks. So youknow I had to convert it to a crock pot recipe. I must apologize for being remiss, I should have had this Crock Pot Sweet Potato Casserole on here way before now. It is so incredibly good! However, I must warn you. If you bring it to a get-together once, it will be demanded that you bring it every year! (Just ask Mikey…I’m pretty sure he won’t let me sit at our holiday table without presenting this first…and I’m not joking. It is required! 🙂 )

Using a mixer, whip together your cooked sweet potatoes, sugar, vanilla, milk, 1/2 cup butter and eggs until they are light and fluffy. Pour into your casserole crock or 6-quart crock pot. Mix together your remaining butter, brown sugar, flour and nuts until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly across the top. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours. If desired, and your crock is oven safe, place in the broiler on hi for 30-90 seconds, until lightly browned. Let it cool for 15-20 minutes (until the topping has cooled enough to crisp up) before serving.
Crock Pot Sweet Potato Casserole Notes
- Do not, I repeat, do NOT walk away from the oven while your casserole is in the broiler. As little as 10 seconds could take this casserole from perfection to burnt while it is in your broiler. Trust me people, turn on your oven light and take root while you watch for that perfect golden hue to appear. Then immediately take it out to cool.

- As with any of our recipes, calorie counts and nutritional information varies greatly depending on which products you choose to use when cooking this dish.
- All slow cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline and shouldalways be tested first in your own slow cooker and time adjusted as needed.

Can you prepare the day before, refrigerate in casserole crockpot, then add topping next day to casserole and cook?

I made this for our Thanksgiving party at work and for my family and both times prepared the night before – even the topping. I just placed the potatoes in a seal proof bowl and refrigerated then put it in the crockpot the morning of. I put the topping in a Ziplock bag and refrigerated. Everyone loved it!

Just wondering if this can be frozen into single serving sizes? It’s just my husband and me, and he would not eat this, but I could/would happily thaw myself a serving at a time! I am giving this a 5 star ahead of making it because I KNOW it would be delicious!!Reply
Aunt Lou says
Hi Alisa! You are so right! It IS delicious! You will love it!
I haven’t ever tried freezing this. I would give it a try if I were you. The topping won’t be as crisp after freezing, but I would think it should still taste wonderful! If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!
